The Four Agreements

the four agreementsSo your life isn’t turning out  like you thought it would and you want things to change, but don’t know how. Since we live in an age of self-help and self-discovery, reading The Four Agreements – A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom  by Don Miguel Ruiz  is a good place to start. The key is you have to be open, willing, ready and courageous enough to take the first step, then be committed to do the work. According to the author, Don Miguel Ruiz, the only way to live a life of true happiness is to rewire your thoughts by practicing four key principles. People “agree” to think  and/or behave a certain way based on what we have been taught by our parents, peers, siblings, friends, teachers, society, etc…you get the picture. We “surrender to the beliefs without our “agreements.”  Without these personal agreements in mind, fear of rejection and being the driving force “we start pretending to be what we are not, just to please others, just to be good enough for someone else.”

  • THE FIRST AGREEMENT:  BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD – “words are so powerful that one word can change a life or destroy it depending on how it is used. The word can set you free, or it can enslave you even more than you know.”  (p.27).
  • THE SECOND AGREEMENT: DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY – “it is not what I am saying that is hurting you; it is that you have wounds that I have touched by what I have said.” (p.51).
  • THE THIRD AGREEMENT: DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS – “all the sadness and drama you have lived in your life was rooted in making assumptions and taking things personally…because we are afraid to ask for clarification.” (p.64).
  • THE FOURTH AGREEMENT: ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST – “you learn to accept yourself. But you have to be aware and learn from your mistakes.” (p.81).

Through embracing and following each of the four agreements you can take the first step of many on your road to self-discovery. Individually they are powerful statements, but when practiced together the synergy brings your experiences to a whole new level. Wanting to change takes courage, committing to change takes perseverance, needing to change takes a new mindset…but it all starts with you.
