the four agreementsThe WINNER of our FEBRUARYBACK to the BOOKS” award is *THE FOUR AGREEMENTS by Don Miguel Ruiz.

So your life isn’t turning out like you thought it would and you want things to change, but you don’t know how. since we live in an age of self-help and self-discovery, reading  THE FOUR AGREEMENTS – A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom is a good place to start.

The key is you have to be open, willing, ready and courageous enough to take the first step, them be committed to do the work.  According to the author, the only way to live a life of true happiness is to rewire your thoughts by practicing four key principles.

Peopleagreeto think and/or behave a certain way based on what we have been taught by our parents, peers, siblings, friends, teachers, society, etc…you get the picture. We “surrender to the beliefs without our ‘agreements.” Without these personal agreements in mind, fear of rejection and being the driving force “we start pretending to be what we are not, just to please others, just to be good enough for someone else.”

  • BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD: The FIRST Agreement – “Words are so powerful that one word can change a life or destroy it depending on how it is used. The word can set you free, or it can enslave you even more than you know.”
  • DON’T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY: The SECOND Agreement – “It is not what I am saying that is hurting you; it is that you have wounds that I ave touched by what I have said.”
  • DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS: The THIRD Agreement – “All the sadness and drama you have lived in your life was rooted in making assumptions and taking things personally…because we are afraid to ask for clarification.”
  • ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST: The FOURTH Agreement – “You learn to accept yourself. But you have to be aware and learn from your mistakes.”

Through embracing and following each of the FOUR AGREEMENTS you can take the first step many on your road to self-discovery. Individually they are powerful statement, but when practiced together the synergy brings our experiences to a whole new level. Wanting to change takes courage, committing to change takes perseverance, needing to change takes a new mindset…but it all starts with you!
